Background:

First host: Lilabet (2273 – 2335)
Symbiont Lifespan: 0-43 years

Lilabet, the first host, was only a shy teenager when she took the Jemm symbiont at the age of nineteen. Like many Trill she was afraid that she may change when she first took the symbiont, but it turned out that she was to be the host to a symbiont that had only just begun its journey through life as well. After being Joined she stayed the same as before, and her plans went ahead.

Lilabet lived out the whole of her life on the Trill homeworld as a scientist, happy to stay in her laboratory all day working on an experiment if some sort, or researching a new project, or attempting a breakthrough in her work. While it was a fairly sedate life it suited Lilabet as she was too shy to even speak to her friends and preferred her quiet life. Jemm, knowing that it had a long life ahead of it, was happy to spend a lifetime doing little more understanding the universe and building up its knowledge.

Lilabet passed away at the age of 62 alone, and to this day only one person knows where her grave lies: Enjyl Jemm.

Second host: Michal (2313 – 2361)
Symbiont Lifespan: 43-69 years

Michal, Jemm’s second host, was wildly different from Lilabet. A young hotshot pilot in the Marines, Michal’s cocky, boisterous attitude wasn’t tempered by the Jem symbiont, and after his joining he was just as much of a heart-breaker as before.

Michal served in the Marines for twenty-two years as a combat pilot, flying from planet to planet with his squadron and leaving a blazing trail of conquests. But as he got older maturity started to replace his unruliness. Still he tried to stay the same, but when he finally retired to the Trill homeworld he found only an emptiness within himself. He had seen women as nothing more than a prize to be one, and as he aged alone the memories of Lilabet’s life made him feel more lonely and depressed. He died when he was 48 years old, burnt out and depressed.

Third host: Enjyl
Symbiont Lifespan: 69yrs – present day.

Born Enjyl Gedan into an extensive Trill family, Enjyl had a good start to life. His parents were influential on the Trill homeworld, ensuring that their seven children got the best education they could achieve. While the youngest of the Reith clan, Enjyl was by no means the runt of the pack. His build was such that he could have been a runner or a fighter, depending on what sport he wished to pursue. As it so happened Enjyl preferred just to keep in shape, and to this day he is still in shape and brimming with energy.

Enjyl’s parents were disappointed that their first six children were not interesting in joining the Symbiont program even though they were more than good enough to pass the tests and join the program. When they discovered Enjyl’s wished to be Joined they were initially overjoyed, however Enjyl fell well below the standard required by the program. And so they searched for the best tutors on Trill to teach their youngest son.

To begin with, Enjyl could not be tutored. He was restless, his concentration would waiver, and as he got older he would more and more often boycott the lessons, preferring to spend time playing a variety sports with his friends then sit in a house all day being taught uninteresting subjects by old, stuffy men and women.

It was not long after his sixteenth birthday that his attitude made a complete u-bend. After meeting a freshly-Joined Trill and spending nearly a whole day talking with her he realised just what he was missing out on, and he returned home that evening and threw himself deep into his studies. Before long, thanks to his parents support and dedication, he was accepted into the program and was found worthy enough to take on a symbiont. However at the time there was no need for a host.

Initially Enjyl was upset: he had his heart set on becoming Joined, and now it seemed as if he would not. However he bounced back quickly, and instead headed off to Starfleet Academy. His ambition was limitless, and he had his sights set on nothing less than a Command of his own. He studied Operations and Command, and this time the energy he would have usually devoted to sports went into his lessons. As a result he quickly rose to the top few cadets of his class, something he was proud of.

Even though he was dedicated to his studies, Enjyl was still an avid sports player, and as an outlet for his pent-up energy he tried for any and all teams. While physically he was more than able to play, he was too eager and often overlooked the rules in favour of having a good time. As such he never made any teams for the first two years of Academy.

In his third year of Academy things became interesting for Enjyl. The cadet became less focused on his studies and more on his sports, trying to make at least one team. His grades, which had always been of the highest standard, dropped off rapidly as he spent his time once again out on the fields. In one respect his perseverance paid off; he finally made the Academy swimming team and become one of the more successful participants.

His tutors were unimpressed by his lack of enthusiasm for lessons, and one day they delivered an ultimatum; either his grades picked up again, or he would return to his second year and start all over again. That night while Enjyl was mulling over his choices, a call came through from the Trill Embassy on Earth: he had a symbiont awaiting him back on Trill. The next day he handed in his LOA and returned to Trill to be Joined.

When he returned a few weeks later his friends noticed a change had come over Enjyl, which of course was to expected. When they spoke to him about what it was like, he explained to them how sad the Jemm symbiont was. With two lonely lifetimes it seemed to know only sadness, and he was determined to show to it the better side of life, often referring to the symbiont as ‘Junior’ and talking about it as if it were his own child.

While Jemm was sad and had no real driving force within itself, Enjyl’s energetic, all-go-no-stop attitude was more than enough to counteract it. Enjyl’s endless passions for sports was enough to start making Jemm happier, and in return Jemm’s extensive knowledge (supplied by Lilabet) meant that Enjyl’s studies picked up again while he still had the time for his sports.

Enjyl started to pick up a habit of speaking to himself, but it was not through any type of madness. He was just showing Jemm the world as if it was a young child, and as he opened Jemm’s eyes to the Universe he started to feel that childish wonder within himself. Now he was becoming more of Enjyl Jemm rather than Enjyl and Jemm; intelligent, sporty, and full of wonder. He graduated the following year a proud ensign, much to his parents joy.

Enjyl’s first posting was to the USS Beaches, an Oberth-class science vessel: the ideal posting for Enjyl. While he was still outgoing, he found that some of the lonliness and insecurity Jemm felt was rubbing off on him, and in big ships and space-stations he found he would become more quiet and withdrawn. The small ship and crew were ideal for him to let out his true colours.

His tour on the Beaches lasted five years, during which time he watched the crew explore the wonders of the Universe while he made sure their systems kept running. While the small ship was ideal for his personality, it didn’t satisfy his needs. He wanted to command a vessel, and being left on the fringes of Federation space exploring wasn't getting him where he wanted. It did satisfy the Lilabet side of his symbiont, but while Jemm would live for hundreds of years Enjyl himself had far less time. He was promoted up to Lieutenant (jg) during his tour, and when the Beaches returned after its five-year tour he put in for a transfer to another ship.

His next posting was also his longest, lasting a total of seven years, during which time he was promoted to Lieutenant and Chief Operations Officer. The ship, the USS Osnabrueck, was an Ambassador-class cruiser, and while it had the right opportunities for his ambition it did little to help his reclusion, and to begin with he was a very quiet, private person. The ship was assigned to patrol duty along the Federation-Romulan Neutral Zone, and was often called into battle.

All that changed in 2370ad. Enjyl picked up his second rank promotion, now a full Lieutenant and Assistant Chief Operations Officer. He got word off the Trill homeworld that his parents had passed away, and after a brief LOA to see them into the next world he returned to his ship to find a few new faces, including one very important young lady.

Ensign Clare Reith joined the Osnabrueck as an auxiliary craft operations officer, dealing with auxiliary craft traffic on board the great ship, which was upgraded to carry a squadron of fighters as well as shuttles. From the first day the two met there was an instant attraction between the two, and a change came over Enjyl Jemm.

He became more confident in public, especially when he was seen with his girlfriend. His ambitious drive slackened slightly, and for four years all he could concentrate on was his relationship with Clare. The pair dated for the whole of the four years they were both serving on the Osnabrueck, more than once getting into trouble with their superiors, but neither were too concerned as they were happy with each other. As time went on and their feelings grew deeper there was a hint of wedding bells on the horizon, but in 2374 the Osnabrueck was sent into battle against the Dominion, partaking in the battle to reclaim Deep Space Nine.

After the battle the Osnabrueck was put in Spacedock for extensive repairs: she lost her shuttlebays and starboard nacelle, and her warp core had to be ejected. The antimatter containment field had dropped for just a second during the battle resulting in most of the secondary hull being gutted, and casualties were high. Such was war.

Ensign Clare Reith was reassigned to the USS DeAston as Assistant Flight Operations Officer while Enjyl was given a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and named Chief Operations Officer on the USS Dove, a Steamrunner-class cruiser. The two were sad to part ways, however the bonds they shared were stronger than the tides of war and still remain the best of friends to this day, meeting up as and when they could and always there for one another despite the distance.

The Enjyl Jemm who became the Dove’s Chief of Operations was a lot different to the young officer on board the Beaches. With age he had hardened somewhat to the horrors of conflict, which still raged around them all as the Dominion War dragged on. Still he had the eyes of a child as he watched the Universe around him, and still he was dedicated to showing ‘Junior’ all he could. Clare had taught him to be more sure of himself, stripping away the shyness inherent to the Jemm symbiont, and the outgoing teenager from Trill was again in his heart. He was even more adventurous than before, accepting any sporting challenge he was presented with and always the first to try his hand at a new alien sport.

The Dove was always an odd name for a warship in Enjyl’s mind, but he lived with it and realised that here, on this small ship, the opportunity for finally reaching a command of his own was at its best. He shined in his duties as Chief Operations Officer, always at hand to help his commanding officer and his executive, mingling with the officers off-duty and becoming quite a popular member of the crew. He started to learn the harmonica for a laugh and joining the blues band the senior staff had created, sometimes playing the wooden flute instead.

In 2376 the Dove was on the forefront of the attack on Cardassia, the small ship being one of the few ships that came out unscathed even though she was in the thick of the action, claiming several Jem’hadar fighters and a cruiser. As a result of the battle the executive officer was promoted and given her own command, and Enjyl stepped in as executive officer.

Two years later another female stepped into his life. Enjyl’s feelings of for Clare had never diminished, but he realised that he had to let women befriend him again if he was to be fully happy. Although he had made friends with several female officers since joining the Dove he could never let them grow closer than just passing friends. After the War he started to allow himself properly befriend women, and one in particular.

2378ad – Lieutenant Acacia Wood joined the crew as Chief Security Officer, and after a few months Enjyl finally picked up the courage to approach her. It was a move he never regretted, and the pair became firm friends as they continued their tour of duty on the Dove. Enjyl never wanted it to progress beyond that, but in the realms of friendship they were unshakable. However age was now tempering Enjyl, and while he had been a little bit more lax on the rules when he was with Clare, now he had to act a bit more responsibly.

After three more years on the Dove Enjyl heard that positions were opening up in the Obsidian Fleet and they were asking for new CO’s. His dream was within reach, but he hesitated for some time. Was he ready for command? Would he succeed? Could he take the pressure and responsibility? The old fear started up again, but when he saw two small escorts were open he saw his chance.

After speaking to Clare and Acacia, who both encouraged him to take command, Enjyl decided that there was nothing for it. His dream was just there: he had promised to show Junior the Universe, and what would be better than with his own ship? With the support of his oldest, best friend and the crew of the Dove he presented his application to the Obsidian Admiralty and waited patiently.

Updated, 1st January 2383:

The Brotherhood had been defeated for now. Having been kept prisoner by them for close to six months, the crews of Starbase 182 and the Courageous had rescued him and Acacia – and many others – before returning the PoW's back to their respective postings.

The mess Jemm had returned to nearly lost him his commission. Half the crew had died by the time they had returned to SB47, but by then the Brotherhood had been illuminated by their ship and throughout the Obsidian Sector the tide had turned. Across seven different worlds the Brotherhood's plans to subvert space-time to bring their Kro'al into their realm were stopped by the loyal. Their fleet had been crushed in a major engagement just outside of Romulan space. What passed for peace had been restored, although at a cost.

The hearing had been tense; before Enjyl was even allowed to return to his command and see his crew he had to stand before his TGCO and fellow TFCO's and answer for what had happened. It never became a court-martial as it was recognised what had happened had been out of his control, and instead he was granted a return to command.

The Eagle had made basic repairs at Starbase Forty-Seven before being escorted back to Starbase Eleven, their original base of operations, for a complete refit. The surviving crew had been granted leave for the duration of the refit – many had gone to see the family and friends who had presumed them to be lost, but some remained. Mainly Engineers and Operations had stayed on to assist with the rebuild, but there were others.

Actually seeing the crew again had been a great joy for Enjyl, but a great sadness that echoed within Jemm. The symbionte was no stranger to loss, and seeing only half the crew had reminded it of Michal's many losses. Forty was nothing to his previous host, but every death hurt the same.

The last three months had gone by in a sort of haze; after the crew's leave was over the Eagle was still in drydock, so they had been placed on temporary assignment to the station, supplementing the crew or helping return their vessel to her former glory. Enjyl had taken a slightly different route; Starfleet Intelligence had enlisted his help in finishing up the last of the Brotherhood resistance, and he needed theirs to find Clare.

They had found her in the end. She had been captured like himself, but she had escaped to a quiet little border colony and gone underground, blending in with the native colonists. He had gone there himself, alone, but the woman that greeted him was not the woman he loved. She had moved on, already married with a child on the way, and when she saw her old love she barely acknowledged him.

The shock was enough for Captain Jemm to officially take a hiatus from the fleet, handing over command of the Eagle to his Andorian successor moments before the ship’s relaunch into duty in the Triangle of Trade. However, the truth was much more sinister and does not exist in any official records. All that is known is that now, eight months later, Jemm has returned to the Starfleet radar, ready for a new mission and command on the USS Merlin.

Personality:

With two previous hosts as well as his own personality, Enjyl Jemm is starting to pick up on the eccentric behaviour of the Joined Trill as the personalities merge together. Enjyl himself is outgoing, adventurous, sporty, but he can be distracted if he doesn’t have his friends and superiors to keep prompting him.

After Joining the shyness of Lilabet and loneliness of Michal started to balance out his nature. Initially the stubborn flame of youth was enough to hold it at bay, but as time went by those aspect starting to show through, more so in large crews and groups. On small ships he is still very much Enjyl, but as the groups expand so he becomes more like Jemm.

Enjyl doesn’t know how to quit; so far he hasn’t yet. He may let one goal eclipse another, but as yet he has not failed anything he has undertaken. He doesn’t like the attitude of giving up in others either, and he has more than once had a few words with such people or succeeded just to prove them wrong. This is another Jemm-based reason: in his opinion Lilabet gave up trying to be friends with people to easily, and Michal gave up on life in the end just because he lost his looks.

The best blending of the two entities is shown by Enjyl’s most prominent attitude: wonderment. He likes to see everything at least once and try everything, like a young child, and this attitude sometime reflects in his behaviour. He still very mature, but likes to see things from knee-high, as it were.

He is thoroughly dedicated to his friendships, and likes nothing better than a night spent with his friends on the crew, be it a meal in the messhall, a sing-along in the crew lounge, or an inter-departmental competition (Enjyl usually joins the weakest team). However sometimes the shy nature breaks through, and Enjyl may spend a night in his quarters alone.

There are, however, darker moments where Enjyl’s own past can come back to the light. In those times the Trill can often take on a whole new persona, one thoroughly dedicated to the eradication of the shadows that still haunt him.
